The Life We Almost Had, Amelia Henley: Book Review

Written by Nicole

A beautiful and emotional romance, The Life We Almost Had by Amelia Henley will give you all types of feels for fictional characters.

The plot:

Anna wasn’t looking for love when Adam swept her off her feet, but there was no denying their connection, and she believed they would be together forever.

Years later, cracks have appeared in their relationship. Anna is questioning whether their love can really be eternal when a cruel twist of fate delivers a crushing blow, and Anna and Adam are completely lost to one another.

Now, Anna needs Adam more than ever, but the way back to him has life-changing consequences.

Is a second chance at first love really worth the sacrifice? Anna needs to decide and time is running out…

This is definitely a book that will stay with you

GOD THIS BOOK. I sobbed for at least the last 70 pages. It’s not your typical romance, and I really thought it wasn’t going to go the way it did and it definitely broke me.

I definitely needed to remind myself that this was fiction as I choked up (a lot). Anna and Adam felt so real – you could picture them in front of you through all the highs and lows. Even the smaller characters, such as Nell and Oliver, were so well built and played fantastic roles.

The plot is entirely unexpected, and the lead up to the ‘twist of fate’ may appear to be going a particular way, but one minute I was laughing and the next I couldn’t believe it! Shocking and makes you consider life, with a story that reminded me of The Two Lives of Lydia Bird by Josie Silver.

Henley definitely has a talent in writing – from picturesque locations, adding in small one-liner humour, to portraying themes which are not easy to deal with (I won’t tell you to keep it spoiler-free, but get in touch if you want trigger warnings).

I adored the meaning behind this book, and I’m a firm believer in some of the points made. It took me on a rollercoaster read, with lots of highs but lots of lows. Romance filled every page, even the sad parts, and made for a fantastic 4-star read.

This is definitely a book that will stay with you – it tore out my heart and gave me a tiny piece back with The Life We Almost Had written on it.
