How to Stop Time, Matt Haig

Written by Nicole

How to Stop Time is a genuine masterpiece and one that is going to be spoken about for years to come (most likely by me).

This book is a beautiful, interesting read with messages about losing and finding yourself and learning how to live. Matt Haig has really outdone himself here.

The plot:

We follow Tom Hazard, a 41-year-old man who has a rare condition meaning he’s been alive for centuries, aging slower than the average person. After being taken in by Hendrich, who runs an organisation to look after those with this condition, we travel with Tom, understanding the true meaning of How to Stop Time.

Jumping back and forth from different time periods to the present, we meet figures from Shakespeare to Scott Fitzgerald, whilst understanding why Hendrich says “the first rule is that you don’t fall in love… no staying in love. No daydreaming of love”.

You can only imagine how much research went into this when Haig was writing How to Stop Time. Every page is exciting with interesting characters you can’t help but just fall in love with. I really didn’t want this book to end; I could just read this all day, every day (and will).

“It’s going to stay in my heart forever.”

How to Stop Time is a wonderful, well-written book with every page bringing you something new to appreciate. I can’t express how beautiful this book is. It’s a very special read, and it’s going to stay in my heart forever.

I’m a huge Matt Haig advocate after he produced The Humans and many other favourites, but his writing and creativity here is breathtakingly beautiful.
