What Was Lost, Jean Levy: Book Review

Written by Nicole

Stop everything you are doing right now and go and get What Was Lost by Jean Levy.

The plot:

Something terrible has happened to successful children’s writer Sarah, but she doesn’t know what it is. All she knows is that it was enough to wipe her mind of memories. Without her past she is lost, friendless, her life reduced to the protected one of a child.

Specialists tell her that she must retrieve her memory of what brought her to be found unconscious on a beach miles from her London home. And the police are interested too.

A chance encounter in the supermarket, with a man who seems strangely familiar, gives Sarah hope. But perhaps some things are best left forgotten…

What Was Lost is my favourite book of 2017 & 2018

I literally loved everything about this book. The story, the characters, the writing, THE STORY. I’ve never read a book where I was so attached, and basically felt every type of emotion and be so obsessed with the welfare of a fictitious character.

I hate to say this, as I’ve read some very good books this year, but What Was Lost is my favourite book of 2017 & 2018. And probably my favourite psychological thriller at this length.

It is quite a long book, at 449 pages, but honestly, I could have had another 1000000 pages. Not because anything was left unanswered, but because the concept is just so clever and I wanted more.

I don’t know what it’ll be like as a re-read, knowing the ending, but I’m re-reading this again ASAP. The reason I loved this book so much wasn’t necessarily the ending (although, oh my god!), but the journey along the way.

Completely unpredictable, and I wish I could relive the hours of reading this. Big shout out to Jean Levy for coming up with a book this wonderful.

Now, what are you waiting for? I did tell you at the beginning of the review to stop everything and go get it!
