If you’re looking for a fast-paced crime thriller which delves into financial crime, Trap by Lilja Sigurdardottir might be for you.
The plot:
Happily settled in Florida, Sonja believes she’s finally escaped the trap set by unscrupulous drug lords. But when her son Tomas is taken, she’s back to square one… and Iceland.
Her lover, Alga, is awaiting sentencing for financial misconduct after the banking crash, and Sonja refuses to see her. Agla also owes money to some extremely powerful men, and they’ll stop at nothing to get it back…
Sonja puts a plan into motion, to bring down the drug barons and her scheming ex-husband and get Tomas back safely. But things aren’t as straightforward as they seem, and Sonja finds herself caught in the centre of a trap that will put all their lives at risk…
The concept is great
This is the second book in the Reykjavik Noir trilogy, and I haven’t read the first book, so this can be read as stand alone. But I think this is where my enjoyment fell down. I’ve read a lot of reviews for this book, and those that have read the first book seemed to really enjoy Trap. But for me, I felt like it was just missing something.
It was fast-paced, and I loved the little twists and turns and the actual story, but I can’t put my finger on what just didn’t make it a top contender for me.
Each chapter had a different character’s viewpoint, and whilst it looked to build the suspense, I found it quite difficult to gauge each character’s voice. But I think this would’ve been helped by reading the first book.
The concept of Trap is great – I rarely read any fiction around financial misconduct and banking crisis’, but it made for an interesting read.
I’m going to be picking up the first book in this trilogy (Snare by Lilja Sigurdardottir) at some point to see whether my verdict changes, and I’ll be interested to see where the third book goes!
