Good Samaritans, Will Carver: Book Review

Written by Nicole

I HAVE NEVER BEEN ON EDGE THIS MUCH IN MY LIFE.

A psychological thriller at its finest – Good Samaritans by Will Carver.

The plot:

Seth Beauman can’t sleep. He stays up late, calling strangers from his phonebook, hoping to make a connection, while his wife, Maeve, sleeps upstairs. A crossed wire finds a suicidal Hadley Serf on the phone to Seth, thinking she is talking to the Samaritans.

But a seemingly harmless, late-night hobby turns into something more for Seth and for Hadley, and soon their late-night talks are turning into day-time meet-ups. And then this dysfunctional love story turns into something altogether darker, when Seth brings Hadley home.

And someone is watching…

In the nicest way possible, Good Samaritans is totally messed up

The short sentences make this for a very quick read, and the story itself means you’ll lose time (and possibly sleep) due to how messed up this book is. You have your horrifying moments, but also the thrills. OH, THE THRILLS.

There are so many twists and turns which made Good Samaritans entirely unpredictable. If you predicted what was going to happen, you deserve a medal of honour pal.

The book is divided into days of the week, but each divide has lots of chapters. These chapters are each split up into a different character, which is extremely well done. But if you think this will help you stop the book at the end of the chapter, you are WRONG.

I also loved the fact that the detective didn’t play too much of a key part. You heard from him on occasions, but Carver‘s originality with the style of writing and chilling syntax meant you didn’t know too much personally about him. Saying this, when you did hear from him, you knew that the murders were being investigated, and added to the depth of this thriller.

I’ve never read a book like this and that hurts my soul, knowing that I’ll struggle to find another book that is so psychologically haunting, but without the mystery of ghosts and ghouls.

In the nicest way possible, Good Samaritans is totally messed up and I’m going to get rid of all the bleach in my house.

A Bookmark That favourite. But I probably won’t be picking this up for a long time because I now need to get over my phobia of people.
