Changeling, Matt Wesolowski: Book Review

Written by Nicole

CHANGELING BY MATT WESOLOWSKI. WHAT A BOOK. I AM SO EXCITED TO TELL YOU ABOUT THIS ONE, I HONESTLY CANNOT COPE. WHAT A TWIST. WHAT A DELIGHT. MIND BLOWN. HELLA GOOD. HELLLLAAAAAAAAAA!

These, ladies and gentlemen, were my thoughts as soon as I finished the book. I’ve given it a week before writing the full review, so I could give you my thoughts once I’d calmed down. The verdict? STILL HELLA GOOD.

The plot:

A missing child. A family in denial. Six witnesses. Six stories. Which one is true?

On Christmas Eve in 1988, seven-year-old Alfie Marsden vanished on the dark Wentshire Forest Pass, when his father, Sorrel, stopped the car to investigate a mysterious knocking sound. No trace of the child, nor his remains, have ever been found. Alfie Marsden was declared officially dead in 1995.

Elusive online journalist, Scott King, whose ‘Six Stories’ podcasts have become an internet sensation, investigates the disappearance, interview six witnesses, including Sorrel and his ex-partner, to try to find out what happened that fateful night.

Journeying through the trees of the Wentshire Forest – a place synonymous with strange sightings, and tales of hidden fold who dwell there, he talks to a company that tried and failed to build a development in the forest, and a psychic who claims to know what happened to the little boy…

I can’t get over this book

I’m going to talk about the formatting of this book first, because it deserves its own mention. It’s basically like reading a podcast (which I am all over at the minute) in a really innovative way, whilst keeping your attention. Every witness’ own personality shone through and the writing in itself is something to marvel at.

Now, what I didn’t know, was that ‘Six Stories’ is actually a series, and Changeling is the third book. They’re all written in the same format, so I’m literally scraping pennies together right now to get the first two books. I haven’t even read what they’re about. I trust you Wesolowski. Just take my money.

This book was one of my most anticipated books of 2019, and I tell ya, it has set the bar HIGH for future reads. Changeling is an absolutely incredible book with a different experience, fantastic story and an insane ending. God, the ending.

Let’s talk about the story: it’s quite harrowing at times, and I’m a bit of a wimp (I’m honestly not sure why I read so many horrors/ psychologically messed up books), but it builds and builds until the ultimate climax. It will put you on edge.

There was one part where I was just holding my breath and reading like 100 words per second, it was unbelievably tense. For about 98% of the book, it isn’t scary. More just ‘what the f* is going on?’ I really loved the whole different points of view concept, whilst still channelling Scott King and his experience of finding out the truth.

Big time Bookmark That approval for this. Honestly. I can’t – and won’t – get over this book. Bring on all the other Wesolowski books!
