A laugh-out-loud romantic comedy which is light-hearted and easy to read, check out Everything is Fine by Gillian Harvey.

The plot:

Jessica Bradley has it all. Gorgeous boyfriend, perfect daughter, successful PR business, influential healthy eating blog. At least, that’s what her followers believe.

In real life, her boyfriend just left her over Post-it, she’s been eating more chocolate cookies than kale, and her perky online persona has never been further from the truth…

But Jessica knows you have to fake it till you make it. Some little white lies, a few staged Instagram pics, and she can keep pretending that everything is fine. But as her life starts to spiral out of control, how can Jessica tell the truth from the tweets? And will she recognise real happiness when it’s right in front of her?

Think: modern day Bridget Jones

I knew this book was going to give me a chuckle, but I didn’t realise it was going to make me literally laugh out loud within the first few pages. Everything is Fine is filled with cringe-worthy moments and a lovely story and would make a great beach read.

I had mixed feelings about the main character – one minute I would be cheering her on, and another moment get frustrated on how she neglects her friends/ daughter and prioritises something which doesn’t need to be prioritised – this is the main theme throughout the book, as well as saying ‘everything is fine’, when in fact, everything is not fine.

It does read slightly YA, despite the main character being in her thirties. There’s lots of different content to break the text up, including blog posts, book excerpts, news articles and email chains, making it a very quick, light-hearted read.

It’s interesting to have different perspectives of how people view the blogging world – both from family/friends but also the main character’s difficulty with her integrity (although I did think this gave a negative view which wasn’t necessarily needed).

I loved how Jessica also worked in PR – this gave the book an additional edge, and we had a few different stories going on throughout. I particularly liked the ‘remembering rainbows’ aspect (I won’t tell you any more for fear of spoilers!), and I’m definitely going to try that out – it had me grinning along with the characters in the book, so warrants a try in real-life!

All in all, a really lovely book – it’s not necessarily one I’m eager to re-read, but I’m definitely glad I read it. 3/5 stars – think: modern day Bridget Jones.
