A gorgeous romance which I highly recommend you don’t wait for, Meet me in London by Georgia Toffolo is the perfect escapism read.
The plot:
Aspiring clothes designer Victoria Scott spends her days working in a bar in Chelsea, and her evenings designing vintage clothes, dreaming of one day opening her own boutique. But these aspirations are under threat from the new department store opening at the end of her road. She needs a Christmas miracle, but one is not forthcoming.
Oliver Russell’s Christmas is not looking very festive right now. His family’s new London department store opening is behind schedule, and on top of that his interfering, if well meaning, mother is pressing him to introduce his girlfriend to her. A girlfriend who does not exist. He needs a diversion. Something to keep his mother from interfering while he focuses on the business.
When Oliver meets Victoria, he offers a proposition: pretend to be his girlfriend at the opening of his store and he will provide an opportunity for Victoria to showcase her designs. But what starts as a business arrangement soon becomes something more tempting, as the fake relationship starts to feel very real. But when secrets in Victoria’s past are exposed will Oliver walk away, or will they both follow their hearts and find what neither knew they were looking for…
I adored every second of this read
Oh I just loved this book. It’s so easy to get lost in, and I read it in two- sittings, but definitely begrudge myself for not reading it in one. I thought if I’d put it down I could just forget about the romance twists which I knew was coming and stay enveloped in Victoria and Oliver’s life.
Toffolo has done an amazing job in making these characters come to life – they appear in front of you in all their romantic form and are entirely memorable. Victoria has my type of vibe – working hard to get where she wants to be and sworn off men – AMEN VICTORIA. And Oliver is witty, sweet and just the type of guy you hope to bump into.
It’s fun and quirky, not overly heavy although very topical – it raises sensitive topics delicately, and you really get a glimpse into how someone could be handling something completely life-changing. It has family politics, surrounded in the London life.
It’s very modern in the language used, which I greatly appreciated – it makes for a quick read, with lots of conversation, and a split-view between the protagonists. This really helps to dig deeper into each personality, and I loved being a fly on the wall.
It has its soppy moments, but it isn’t a “I’m going to die alone” type of read – it’s comforting and happy, but of course, made me cry numerous times like a typically good romance does.
From the locations, to the minor characters and every page being an exciting pleasure, this is a cracking romance debut – an easy 5-star read.
I adored every second of this read, and with an excerpt of Toffolo’s next book, I can’t wait!
